Stainless steel’s top corrosion resistance rating is due to its content of about 35% by weight of alloys and trivial levels of carbon.

A key factor is that the chromium content is twice the critical minimum required (10.5%) to generate a sustainable passive layer and avoid corrosion. Below this level, resistance is feeble and short lived. Below this level, resistance is feeble and short lived. Deterioration accelerates sharply diminishing service life without major repair.
