Like any other rebar, But superior durability
In addition to the superior durability of stainless steel where it is evident that no other reinforcing steel can deliver a 100 year service life without major repairs, there are so many other practical reasons for using stainless steel rebar.
From a design point of view, there is no difference between stainless and conventional steel, while there are advantages relative to other rebar products.
The modulus of elasticity is 3% less than conventional steel; hence the design concepts and methods are the same.
The development and lap splice lengths is the same black bar, unlike coated steel.
The bond with concrete is equal to conventional black steel.
Stainless is a high strength steel offering Grade 80 yield strength as per ASTM A955.
The elongation and ductility make stainless an ideal material for seismic applications.
There are other varied applications such as in low magnetic permeability situations, or low and high temperature environments.
There is no difference in the bar sizes Click to doc “A955 Table of Bar Sizes.docx”; rib patterns and bar lengths are the same.
Stainless steel mechanical couplers and rolls of tie wire are readily available and are a stock item.
Stainless is a weldable product under the standard AWS D1.6. click to Resources
The opportunity during design / construction to reduce concrete cover, eliminate concrete mix additives and deck protection systems – stainless does not need the added protection.
Other properties such as Charpy’s, etc.
